AHEAD ON STATE OF TEXAS. STATE OF TX OPENJOSH: ANGER AND ANXIETY SPILL OUT INTO THE STREETS AFTER DONALD TRUMP WINS THE WHITE HOUSE… WE’LL LOOK DEEPER AT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO THE ELECTION… AND WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO MOVE FORWARD AS DONALD TRUMP PREPARES TO TAKE POWER IN OUR NATION’S CAPITAL… THERE ARE NEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW HIS PRESIDENCY COULD AFFECT WHAT HAPPENS AT OUR STATE CAPITOL… GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US FOR STATE OF TEXAS. I’M JOSH HINKLE. PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP IS DOMINATING THE NEWS… WITH MANY TEXANS LOOKING AHEAD TO HOW HIS PRESIDENCY COULD IMPACT THE LONE STAR STATE. AS EXPECTED, TRUMP WON TEXAS… THE MARGIN WAS LARGER THAN MANY PRE-ELECTION POLLS PREDICTED… TRUMP BEAT HILLARY CLINTON BY NEARLY 1-POINT-7 MILLION VOTES TO EARN A 10-POINT MARGIN OF VICTORY. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DAN PATRICK LED TRUMP’S SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN EFFORTS IN TEXAS. KXAN’S PHIL PRAZAN SPOKE TO THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ON THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION TO GET PERSPECTIVE ON HOW A TRUMP PRESIDENCY COULD CHANGE TEXAS…LT. GOV. DAN PATRICK: “NOT SINCE THE REVOLUTION IN THIS COUNTRY HAVE WE SEEN PEOPLE RISE UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS LIKE WE SAW LAST NIGHT.”PHIL: TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR DAN PATRICK CHAIRED DONALD TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN IN TEXASâ| BUT SAYS HE’S NOT LOOKING FOR A PLACE IN THE ADMINISTRATION.INSTEAD HE’S GOING TO USE HIS ROLE IN THE TRANSITION TEAM TO FEED HIM NAMES OF QUALIFIED TEXAS CANDIDATESâ| IN GOVERNMENT AND OUT.PATRICK: “DO YOU KNOW W NG IT’ENIN ESTI O A G I T WHITEOU TT Y S TO.” PHIL: HE SAYS INSTEAD OF SUING AND GETTING SUED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OVER NEW LAWS, TEXAS GOP LAWMAKERS HAVE AN ADMINISTRATION THAT SUPPORTS THEMâ| ESPECIALLY IN IMMIGRATION AND BORDER SECURITY.PATRICK: “ENDORSED BY THE BORDER PATROL, ENDORSED BY ICE, HE’S GOING TO LET THEM DO THEIR JOB.” PHIL: BUT FOR THE PROTESTS ALREADY GOING ON IN TEXAS AND AROUND THE COUNTRYâ| LT. GOVERNOR PATRICK SAYS HE DOESN’T EXPECT ALL OPPONENTS TO COME AROUND. PATRICK: “THEY’RE NOT INTERESTED IN COMING TOGETHER. THEY’RE INTERESTED IN BEING DIVISIVE.” PHIL PRAZANKXAN NEWS. JOSH:WHILE DAN PATRICK SAYS HE’S NOT INTERESTED IN JOINING TRUMP’S TEAM IN D.C., THERE IS ALREADY TALK ABOUT HIGH-PROFILE TEXANS WHO COULD BE OFFERED POSITIONS IN THE NEW ADMINISTRATION… FORMER GOVERNOR.. AND ONE-TIME TRUMP CHALLENGER.. RICK PERRY HAS OPENLY SAID HE’S OPEN TO SERVING. HE’S ALSO A FORMER TEXAS AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER.. WHO SERVED ON TRUMP’S AGRICULTURAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE. CURRENT TEXAS AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER SID MILLER HAS ALSO BEEN FLOATED AS A POSSIBLE AGRICULTURE SECRETARY. MILLER HAS A HOME IN AUSTIN – AND HE CAMPAIGNED HARD FOR TRUMP. BUT EARLIER THIS MONTH, MILLER TOOK A P-R HIT AFTER AN OBSCENE REFERENCE TO HILLARY CLINTON APPEARED ON HIS TWITTER ACCOUNT. DURING THE CAMPAIGN, TRUMP MENTIONED TEXAS SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DON WILLETT AS A POSSIBLE SUPREME COURT NOMINEE.. WE’VE TOLD YOU HOW WILLETT HAS A STRONG FOLLOWING ON SOCIAL MEDIA – FUELED BY HIS POSTS ABOUT TEXAS, THE LAW, AND HIS BELOVED BAYLOR BEARS… WILLETT THOUGH — HAS BEEN CRITICAL OF PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP IN HIS TWEETS. JOSH: FOR PERSPECTIVE ON TRUMP’S ELECTION VICTORY – AND THE EFFECT HERE IN TEXAS – WE TURN TO OUR ROUND TABLE…WE’RE JOINED BY SHERRI GREENBERG FROM THE LBJ SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND JIM HENSON FROM THE TEXAS POLITICS PROJECT JOSH: A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO ACCEPT THESE RESULTS. WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN? GREENBERG: WELL I’M SEEING A LOT OF SURPRISE, FRANKLY ON BOTH SIDES I THINK. BUT I AM ALSO SEEING PEOPLE WHO ARE WAITING TO SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT BECAUSE THIS IS VERY UNKNOWN TERRITORY WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN A CELEBRITY WITH NO EXPERIENCE IN GOVERNMENT CLEARLY HAS FORGED HIS OWN PATH ALL THE WAY FROM THE DAY HE ANNOUNCED UNTIL NOW. LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT TRANSITION BUT IT SEEMS TO BE MAINLY THE RUMOR BILL AND NONE OF IT IS REALLY SUBSTANTIATED AT THIS POINT.JOSH: YOU’RE THE POLLING GUY. WHAT HAPPENED THERE? HENSON: WELL I THINK TWO THINGS ARE GOING ON HERE. I THINK WE ARE STILL COUNTING VOTES. ONE OF THE UNDERTOLD STORIES TOLD SO FAR IS WITH HILLARY CLINTON LOOKING TO WIN THE VOTE WITH A LOT OF MAIL IN VOTES COMINGIN FROM CALIFORNIA, A LOT OF THE NATIONAL POLLING IS NOT GOING TO BE TOO FAR OFF IN ALL LIKELY HOOD. SEVERAL POLLS HAD HER IN THE RANGE OF ONE OR TWO PERCENT LEADING. SHE IS PROBABLY GOING TO COME OUT IN THE RANGE OF ONE PERCENT WINNING THE POPULAR VOTE. SO THE NATIONAL POLLING WAS PROBABLY PRETTY CLOSE AND THE PROBLEMS CAME AT THE STATE LEVEL. AND I THINK WHAT IT HAS REALLY EXPOSED IS A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT THINGS. ONE, STATE LEVEL POLLING IS A VERY MIXED BAG. STATE POLLED GET PLANNED, PAYED FOR, AND CONDUCTED IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS AND THAT IS THE DATA THAT WENT INTO A LOT OF THE STATE LEVEL POLLING. AND SOME OF THAT POLLING CLEARLY HAD SOME SYSTEMATIV ERROR, AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE AT THIS POINT. THERE WILL BE A BIG TASK FORCE. A COMMITTEE HAS BEEN BORN. CHRIS LAZIAN FROM UT AUSTIN GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE ON THAT COMMITTEE. THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC OPINION RESEARCH. SO I THINK WE WILL HEAR A LOT MORE ABOUT IT BUT I DO THINK THAT THE MISS WAS NOT QUITE AS GENERAL AS PEOPLE THINK.GREENBERG: I THINK THAT JIM BRINGS UP AN INTERESTING POINT WHICH IS SHE WON ON THE VOTE. HILLARY CLINTON HAS THE MOST NUMBER OF VOTES. IT IS WHEN WE TURN TO THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE AND IT IS SO DIFFERENT LOOKING AT WHO IS GOING TO WIN AS FAR AS THE POPULAR VOTE AND STATE BY STATE. I THINK WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WEREN’T FACTORING INTO THE WHOLE NATIONAL SCENE WAS THIS REALLY HUGE ISSUE OF ECONOMIC SEGREGATION THAT WE ARE SEEING. SO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN OR PERCEIVE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF THE GROWING PROSPERITY AND I THINK THAT WE SAW THAT PLAY OUT.THE BLUE WALL DID NOT HOLD AND DID NOT HOLD IN THESE AREAS WHERE PEOPLE HAVE, AS I SAID, BEEN LEFT OUT AS FAR AS OUR GROWING PROSPERITY WE HAVE SEEN OVER THE PAST YEARS. AND THIS DEEP ECONOMIC SEGREGATION WE SEE ACROSS OUR COUNTRY BETWEEN PARTS OF CITIES, AMONG CITIES, RURAL VERSUS URBAN, SUBURBANIZATION OF PROPERTY. IT IS ALL OUT THERE.JOSH: DO YOU THINK THE POLLING THAT SHOWED SHE WAS SO FAR AHEAD PLAYED INTO PEOPLE GOING OUT TO THE POLLS? IT SHOES ONLY HALF OF THE POPULATION ACTUALLY VOTED.HENSON: I THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN SOMETHING OF A FACTOR AROUND THE EDGES BUT A LOT OF THIS WAS, FOR SUCH AN UNUSUAL ELECTION, A LOT OF THE PATTERNS LOOK PRETTY FAMILAR, LIKE SHERRI SAID ABOUT HOW LOW THE TURNOUT WAS. IN A LOT OF WAYS, PEOPLE REALLY CAME HOME IN THE END. WE SAW SOME MOVEMENT IN THE POLLS IN BOTH THE STATE AND THE NATIONAL LEVEL, BUT IN THE END, PARTY IDENTIFICATION CAME OUT TO BE A PRETTY STRONG FORCE HERE BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT HAS HAPPENED. SHERI MADE REFERENCE TO URBANIZATION AND SUBURBANIZATION. GEOGRAPHY IS A BIG PART OF THIS AND ITS INTERSECTION WITH CULTURE. THAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK WE ARE GOING TO BE PACKING AND MOVING FORWARD IS THE WAY THAT, AS WE SAW IN TEXAS, CLINTON’S TOTALS WENT UP IN THE URBAN AREAS BUT TRUMPS TOTALS ALSO. HE REALLY RAN THE TABLE IN THE URBAN, SUBURBAN, AND SMALL CITY AREAS. THAT IS A PATTERN THAT WE SAW. IT IS THAT PATTERN THAT REALLY MOVED THOSE MIDWESTERN STATES THAT BROUGH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE INTO TRUMP’S CAMP.GREENBERG: THE POLLING WAS SHOWING THIS. PARTY IDENTIFICATION, NO MATTER REALLY ON EITHER SIDE WHAT WAS SAID OR WHAT NEW SURPRISE OR WAS ABOUT CLINTON, TRUMP PEOPLE WERE REALLY STAYING WITH THEIR PARTY IDENTIFICATION. THAT AND THE FACT THAT PEOPLE ALL ACROSS THE HEART LAND WHO CAME OUT TO VOTE BASED ON A FEELING THAT THEY WANTED CHANGE. THEY WANTED CHANGE. WE SAW THAT WITH OBAMA. I THINK THERE WAS PART OF SOMETHING ELSE THAT WAS PLAYING OUT WHICH WAS PEOPLE REALLY THIS BUSH CLINTON FATIGUE WAS REAL. WE SAW THAT WITH JEB BUSH IN THE PRIMARY. WE SAW IT WITH HILLARY CLINTON NOW. THIS FEELING THAT THESE ARE THE DYNASTIES, THE ELITES. THEY ARE NOT IN TOUCH WITH ME AND MY NEEDS AND THE NEEDS OF MY FAMILY. JOSH: DO YOU THINK WITH HER WINNING THE POPULAR VOTE AND WHAT HAPPENED IN 2000 PEOPLE ARE REALLY QUESTIONING THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE SYSTEM? GREENBERG: YES I DO THINK PEOPLE ARE QUESTIONING IT. IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA AND YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT, YOU MIGHT FEEL THAT YOUR VOTE DOESN’T COUNT AND ACTUALLY IF YOU LIVE IN TEXAS AND YOU ARE A REPUBLICAN, YOU MAY FEEL THAT YOUR VOTE DOESN’T COUNT GIVEN THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE. PEOPLE ARE QUESTIONING IT. DO I THINK WE WILL SEE A CHANGE? NO. HENSON: I WOULDN’T BET ON IT, PARTICULARLY IN THE SHORT RUN. THERE ARE REASONABLE ARGUMENTS FOR THE WAY THAT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE PROPELS CAMPAIGNS AND CANDIDATES TO DISPERSE THEIR ACTIVITIES NATIONALLY. I THINK WHEN WE LOOK AT THIS THERE WILL BE A LOT OF DISCUSSION THAT WILL GET FRANKLY MORE SOPHISTICATED AS TIME GOES ON. I THINK A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT WE ARE TAKING FOR GRANTED THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY ARE NOT GOING TO WITHSTAND A LOT OF SCRUTINY. FOR EXAMPLE, THERE IS THIS DOMINATE NARRATIVE THAT TRUMP WAS PROPELLED BY ALL OF THESE PEOPLE THAT WERE NON COLLEGE EDUCATED AND THAT WERE LEFT OUT. NOW HE MADE THOSE APPEALS BUT HE WON A BIG CHUNK OF VOTERS THAT HAVE COLLEGE DEGREES AND THAT ARE IN SUBURBAN AREAS AND THAT DON’T CONFORM QUITE TO THAT ARGUMENT. IT IS GOING TO TAKE US AWHILE TO UNPACK ALL THIS AND FIGURE OUT REALLY HOW PEOPLE SORTED. GREENBERG: I AGREE. I THINK IT WAS VERY COMPLICATED AND CERTAINLY THAT PARTY IDENTIFICATION AND PEOPLE COMING HOME AND PEOPLE LOOKING FOR CHANGE, MANY COMPLICATED FACTORS. JOSH: THERE ARE A LOT OF NAMES MENTIONED FOR TRUMP’S CABINET. IF YOU THOUGHT WHAT TEXAN, WHO DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE? GREENBERG: POTENTIALLY RICK PERRY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS. HENSON: HONESTLY, I DON’T KNOW. IF YOU WANTED ME TO PICK SOMEONE THAT WAS A SLEEPER THAT MAYBE WASN’T SOMEBODY THAT EVERYBODY ISN’T SO FAMILAR WITH. MAYBE JEB HENSARLING. HE HAS BEEN DISCUSSED. GREENBERG: AND MCCAUL MAYBE IS ANOTHER ONE. HENSON: I MEAN MCCAUL WOULD BE AN INTERESTING CHOICE BECAUSE IT FAVOR TO TED CRUZ. JOSH: RIGHT. OK, THANK YOU GUY JOSH:AHEAD ON STATE OF ..RAONVETHE ELECTION BNG TTEARS – OTHERS TO PROTT T STREETS. WE LOOK CLOSER AT WHY THE RESULT HAD A STRONG PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT ON MANY PEOPLE – AND THE STEPS NEEDED TO MOVE FORWARD…WOMAN SAYS: “SO THAT CALL DEFINITELY PUT ME ON MY TOES TO WATCH OUT BECAUSE IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.”JOSH:YOU MIGHT BE AMONG MILLIONS OF AMERICANS GETTING THOSE ANNOYING CALLS – EVEN THOUGH YOU’RE SIGNED UP ON A “NO CALL LIST.”WE’LL TELL COMING… AND WHAT YOU CAN ((MUSIC))JOSH HINKLE: WELCOME BACK TO STATE OF TEXAS.ALL OF THOSE UNWANTED PHONE CALLS MANY OF YOU’RE GETTING LATELY. EVEN THOUGH MANY OF YOU HAVE SIGNED UP ON A LIST – SO YOU WON’T GET THOSE CALLS.THE FEDERAL “DO NOT CALL REGISTRY” AND THE “TEXAS NO-CALL LIST” WERE PUT IN PLACE MORE THAN A DECADE AGO.BUT KXAN INVESTIGATOR AREZOW DOOST DISCOVERED… THEY’RE NOT WORKING… AND THOSE CALLS COULD BE COSTING YOU A LOT OF MONEY.SOUND OF: PHONE RINGING WOMAN ON PHONE: “THIS IS RACHEL AT CARD HOLDER SERVICESâ|” SOUND OF: PHONE RINGING ROBOCALL VOICE: “CONGRATULATION YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE A FREE CRUISEâ|”SOUND OF: PHONE RINGING SCAM CALL VOICE: “HELLO THIS CALL IS AN OFFICIAL NOTICE FROM IRS INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE.”BETH PEACOCK/FRAUSTRATED BY ROBOCALLS “I HAD ONE THAT CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD. THE GENTLEMEN CALLED AND SAID HE WAS WITH THE IRS… SOUND OF SCAM E-MAIL CALL: “THE REASON FOR THIS CALL IS TO INFORM YOU THAT IRS FILING LAWSUIT AGAINST YO”BETH PEACOCK/FRAUSTRATED BY ROBOCALLS “AND OF COURSE THAT MADE ME SO CONCERNED.” AREZOW: BETH PEACOCK NOTICED THE CALLS… BETH: “WOW! WHAT… I’M IN TROUBLE WITH THE GOVERNMENT! NO! NO! NO!” AREZOW: …SHE SAYS THEY STARTED POPPING UP MORE AND MORE ON HER CELL PHONE. PEACOCK SAYS IT’S USUALLY IN THE MORNINGS AND SHE CAN GET THEM AT LEAST 3 TIMES A WEEK. DURING ONE OF THEM… SHE STARTED ASKING QUESTIONSâ| AND THE CALLER THREATENED HER. BETH PEACOCK/FRUSTRATED BY ROBOCALLS: “HE WASN’T VERY HAPPY AND HE TOLD ME HE DOES HAVE MY ADDRESS AND HE IS GOING TO SEND THE POLICE OFFICER AND HANDCUFF ME AND THEN SLAMMED THE PHONE DOWN.” AREZOW: PEACOCK HAS REGISTERED HER NUMBER ON A NO CALL LIST… BUT SAYS IT’S NOT WORKINGâ|TERRY HADLEY/SPOKESPERSON FOR THE PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION “I GET THEM AT WORK EVEN.” IN TEXAS, IT’S THE PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION THAT’S SUPPOSED TO WATCH OVER THE STATE’S NO CALL LIST.AREZOW ASKS “DOES THE PUC HAVE ANY ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY?”TERRY HADLEY/SPOKESPERSON FOR THE PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION “WE CAN REMOVE THE CERTIFICATES ALLOWING THOSE TELEMARKETERS TO OPERATE AND ALSO WE HAVE ENFORCED MONETARY PENALTIES AGAINST SOME TELEMARKETERS.” AREZOW: THE PUC’S BIGGEST CASE WAS BACK IN 20-13, WHEN THE AGENCY SLAPPED REMODELING COMPANY DISCOUNT CONTRACTORS WITH A FINE OF MORE THAN 30-THOUSAND DOLLARS. TERRY HADLEY/SPOKESPERSON FOR THE PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION “THEY ARE NOT MASSIVE AMOUNTS, BUT THEY HAVE RESULTED IN SEVERAL THOUSAND TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS.” BIGGER CASES MOVE ON TO THE TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE FOR STIFFER PENALTIES.IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, THE AG HAS FILED 7 LAWSUITS AGAINST COMPANIES. ONE OF THE LARGEST INVOLVED PRECISE ENTERPRISES…. A MARKETING COMPANY OUT OF CALIFORNIA.COURT DOCUMENTS SAY THAT IN JUST A 2-MONTH SPAN… THE COMPANY MADE AT LEAST 204,000 TELEPHONE CALLS TO VERIZON WIRELESS CUSTOMERS IN TEXAS.MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE WERE TO NUMBERS REGISTERED ON A NO-CALL LIST.AREZOW DOOST: “TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE IT VERY CHEAP FOR SCAMMERS TO MAKE A MASSIVE NUMBER OF PHONE CALLS LIKE THAT. MANY DISGUISE THEIR NUMBERS TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THEY’RE CALLING FROM PLACES HERE AT HOMEâ| BUT IN REALITY, A LOT OF THEM ARE FARAWAY IN OTHER COUNTRIES. AND THAT MAKES IT TOUGH TO TRACK THEM DOWN.”BUT SOMETIMES THOSE CULPRITS DO GET CAUGHT. JUST LAST MONTH – POLICE IN INDIA ARRESTED DOZENS OF SUSPECTED SCAMMERS THEY BELIEVE WERE POSING AS THE IRS, DEMANDING UNPAID TAXES FROM AMERICANS AND RUNNING FAKE CALL CENTERS.SOUND OF: SCAM E-MAIL CALL: “CURRENTLY YOUR PHYSICAL ADDRESS IS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.” AREZOW: THAT’S A SIMILAR CALL PEACOCK SAYS SHE RECEIVEDâ| BUT KNOWS NOW NOT TO PICK UP CERTAIN NUMBERS.BETH PEACOCK/FRUSTRATED BY ROBOCALLS: “IT’S VERY DISTRACTING! VERY DISRUPTIVE!” “APPARENTLY IT DOESN’T HELP TO BE PUT ON THE NOT CALL LIST.” JOSHTHAT WAS AREZOW DOOST REPORTING.THE TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL DOESN’T IGNORE YOUR COMPLAINTS… BUT IT’S LOOKS FOR TRENDS WITH MANY COMPLAINTS.IT’S WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE FEDERAL TRADE AND THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATION COMMISSIONS FOR EVEN LARGER LAWSUITS AGAINST SCAMMERS. WE’VE ALSO LEARNED THERE ARE EXEMPTIONS TO THE NO-CALL LISTS.POLITICAL GROUPS AND CHARITIES ARE EXEMPT.AND BUSINESSES YOU’VE BOUGHT SOMETHING FROM OR MADE A PAYMENT TO IN THE LAST 18 MONTHS CAN CALL YOU, BUT THEY HAVE TO STOP IF YOU ASK THEM TO. ANGER AND ANXIETY SPILL OUT INTO THE STREETS AFTER DONALD TRUMP WINS THE WHITE HOUSE… WE’LL LOOK DEEPER AT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO THE ELECTION… AND WHAT IT WILL PROTESTORS CHANT: “WHEN DO WE WANT IT? NOW! WHAT DO WE WANT? JUSTICE! WHEN DO WE WANT IT? NOW!” JOSH:PROTESTORS ANGRY OVER THE ELECTION TOOK TO THE STREETS IN AUSTIN AND MANY OTHER AMERICAN CITIES LAST WEEK… SOME OF THOSE PROTESTS LED TO ARRESTS – EVEN VIOLENCE. THE QUESTION MANY PEOPLE HAVE NOW: HOW DO WE MOVE BEYOND ALL THE ANGER AND ANXIETY FROM THE ELECTION?FOR PERSPECTIVE, WE TURN TO UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR ART MARKMAN… WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE HAVING A HARD TIME COPING WITH THIS?MARKMAN: WELL, THIS WAS AN UTTERLY UNEXPECTED RESULT. I MEAN, ANYONE THAT LOOKED AT THE POLLS WAS PRETTY THAT HILLARY CLINTON WAS GOING TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT PROBABLY UP UNTIL 8:30 LOCAL TIME ON TUESDAY NIGHT, AT WHICH POINT IT BEGAN TO FEEL LIKE THINGS MAY HAVE SHIFTED. AND SO WHAT I THINK HAPPENED IS, IF YOU WERE A TRUMP SUPPORTER, YOU ARE NOW ELATED IN AN UNEXPECTED WAY, BUT IF YOU WERE A CLINTON SUPPORTER YOU ARE GOING THROUGH A MOURNING PROCESS RIGHT NOW. AND WE HAVE TO TREAT IT LIKE A MOURNING PROCESS. WHEN SOMEBODY LOSES A LOVED ONE, YOU DON’T IMMEDIATELY ASK THEM TO START DOING PRODUCTIVE THINGS. THE FIRST THING YOU DO IS GIVE THEM A WEEK TO JUST ACCEPT WHAT’S HAPPENED AND COME TO GRIPS WITH IT AND TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE CLOSE WITH THEM AND JUST GET A GRIP OF A NEW REALITY. AND ONLY AFTER ABOUT A WEEK WILL PEOPLE BEGIN BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT HOW THEY WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. JOSH: YEAH, I WAS TELLING YOU WE WERE AT THE DEMOCRATIC WATCH PARTY IN DOWNTOWN AUSTIN. YOU KNOW, THERE WERE THOSE AT 8:30 WHO REALIZED KINDA WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THEY STARTED LEAVING BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT IT’S NO BIG DEAL TO STAY AROUND HERE. THERE WERE SOME THAT WERE REALLY REALLY HANGING ON AND REALLY HOPEFUL AND THEN BY THE END OF THE NIGHT THEY WERE SO TIRED. I SAW PEOPLE ON THE GROUND CRYING. IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE DIED. MARKMAN: IF YOU LOOK AT SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS PEOPLE ARE HAVING. IF YOU LOOK AT THE POSTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WHAT YOU ARE GETTING IS VARIOUS PIECES OF THOSE STAGES OF GRIEF. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE BARGAINING. THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE ANGRY. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE DEPRESSED. AND WE HAVEN’T QUITE REACHED ACCEPTANCE. I THINK A LOT PEOPLE ARE STILL NOT QUITE AT THAT STAGE YET.JOSH: BEFORE THE ELECTION THERE WAS SO MUCH ANGER FROM BOTH SIDES. HOW DO WE LET GO OF THAT? MARKMAN: I THINK WHAT IS FUNDAMENTAL FOR US TO START WITH IS TO RECOGNIZE NO MATTER WHO WON THIS ELECTION. THERE WERE A LOT OF ANGRY PEOPLE OUT THERE. THERE WERE A LOT OF DONALD TRUMP SUPPORTERS WERE PEOPLE WHO WERE ANGRY. I THINK A LOF OF PEOPLE WHO GRAVITATED TOWARDS BERNIE SANDERS WERE PEOPLE WHO WERE ANGRY AND FELT LIKE THEIR VOICES WEREN’T BEING HEARD BY THE SYSTEM. AND WE HAVE TO ACTUALLY BEGIN TO GRAPPLE WITH THAT. NO MATTER WHO WON THIS ELECTION, IT WAS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT TO BEGIN TO ACTUALLY ALLOW PEOPLE TO HAVE THEIR STORIES HEARD AND I THINK WHAT PEOPLE ARE SEEING IS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE FELT LIKE THE GOVERNMENT MAY HAVE BEEN OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE BUT THEY DIDN’T FEEL LIKE IT WAS ACTUALLY FOR THEM AND THAT THEIR STORY WASN’T FIGURING INTO THE WAY THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS OPERATING. AND SO NOW THAT MEANS ON BOTH SIDES IT MEANS THAT THE NEW ADMINISTRATION IS GOING TO ACTUALLY HAVE TO TAKE THE CONCERNS OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO DON’T FEEL LIKE THEY’RE BEING HEARD SERIOUSLY. BUT IT ACTUALLY MEANS THAT THE REST OF US NEED TO BEGIN TO DO THAT TOO.WE ACTUALLY NEED TO BEGIN TO LISTEN A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THE PEOPLE AROUND US, HEAR WHAT THEIR CONCERNS ARE, AND NOT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS FOR WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM, BUT ACTUALLY TRY TO ENGAGE A LITTLE BIT MORE AND HELP OURSELVES RECATAGORIZE OURSELVES RATHER THAN JUST BEING DEMOCRATIC OR REPUBLICAN, RATHER THAN JUST FEELING LIKE WE’RE POOR OR RICH. WE NEED TO RECATAGORIZE OURSELVES AS AMERICANS.JOSH: I HAVE SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE LIKE WHAT DO I DO NOW? I’M A DEMOCRAT AND WE HAVE FOUR MORE YEARS OF A REPUBLICAN. WHAT DO I DO AS A DEMOCRAT?MARKMAN: WELL I THINK THE FIRST THING RECOGNIZE IS THE GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY HAS VERY LITTLE CONTROL OVER PEOPLE’S DAY TO DAY LIVES. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT ALMOST ANYONE WHO EVER GETS INTERVIEWED AFTER BEING PRESIDENT SAYS IS THAT THEY ARE SURPRISED BY HOW LITTLE POWER THEY HAVE. THE FACT IS THAT ACTUALLY LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROBABLY HAS MUCH MORE POWERFUL IMPACT OF PEOPLE’S DAY TO DAY LIVES THAN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOES AND THAT OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS AND BUSINESSES HAVE A BIGGER IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES. SO IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING AND YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT, GET INVOLVED. GET INVOVLED IN LOCAL POLITICS BUT GET INVOLVED IN THINGS THAT WILL ACTUALLY CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVES. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO FEEL LIKE THEY WERE LEFT OUT OF THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. WE NEED TO ACTUALLY HELP PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEIR LIVES ARE GETTING BETTER AND THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN LOCALLY. POLITICS IS LOCAL AND SO IT’S NOT ABOUT WAITING FOUR YEARS AND THEN HOPING FOR ANOTHER GO AT A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. WHAT CAN WE DO NOW THAT WILL CHANGE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AROUND US? JOSH: GOOD STUFF TO THINK ABOUT. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US, ART.MARKMAN: GOOD TO BE HERE.JOSH: THANK YOU AGAIN FOR JOINING US FOR STATE OF TEXAS: IN-DEPTH.STAY TUNED FOR MEET

  1. All you so called christians who voted for trump are a joke. How do you expect anyone else to believe in your god when you don't even believe in the teachings of Jesus? I spit in your direction.
