REOPEN TOMORROW. REPORTING LIVE IN DENVER, KELLY WERTHMANN, COVERING COLORADO FIRST. THANK YOU KELLY. CONTINUING OUR COVERAGE OF COLORADO TONIGHT AT 6:00, THE FRUSTRATION OVER ELECTRIC SCOOTERS IN DENVER GETS PHYSICAL. A MAN SAYS SOMEONE SLAPPED HIM FOR RIDING ONE ON THE SIDEWALK. NOW WE TOLD YOU BEFORE ABOUT THE CONFUSION OVER WHERE YOU CAN OR CANNOT RIDE THE SCOOTERS. IN DENVER IT’S TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL TO RIDE THEM IN THE BIKE LANES OR ON THE ROAD, AND IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE IS CONFUSED ABOUT THE RULES. REPORTER: PEOPLE ARE STILL GETTING USED TO SEEING THESE ON THE STREET, AND RIGHT NOW THEY’RE CONSIDERED MOTORIZED TOYS THAT GO UP TO 15 MILES PER HOUR. WHILE THE CITY AND STATE WORK TOGETHER TO DETERMINE WHAT CHANGES NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED, THE MAN SLAPPED HOPES PEOPLE CAN WRAP THEIR HEADS AROUND THE CURRENT LAWS AS THEY ARE. I WAS HIT A LOT HARDER THAN I ACTUALLY REALIZED. REPORTER: IT WAS A SCENE ERIC COULDN’T HAVE DREAMED UP. NOW I’VE BECOME THE FACE OF THIS CONFLICT, AND I WAS JUST TRYING TO RIDE A SCOOTER. REPORTER: THE CONFLICT IS UNLIKE ANYTHING OTHER. I NEVER THOUGHT HE WAS — UNLIKE ANY OTHER. I NEVER THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO HIT ME. REPORTER: ERIC WAS ON HIS SCOOTER ON THE SIDEWALK WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE WHEN A VERY ANGRY STRANGER APPROACHED HIM. AND HE SAID THOSE BELONG IN THE STREET, AND I SAID NO ACTUALLY THEY BELONG ON THE SIDEWALK. REPORTER: ERIC WAS RIGHT. WHILE CHANGES ARE IN THE WORKS, THE LAW SAYS SCOOTERS ARE ONLY ALLOWED ON SIDEWALKS. ERIC TRIED TO EXPLAIN, BUT WAS CUT OFF. AND HE SAID I’LL TEACH YOU A LESSON AND HIT ME ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD. REPORTER: THE MAN DISAPPEARED, AND ERIC DECIDED NOT TO FOLLOW. WHAT IS HIS PAST INCIDENTS WITH THESE SCOOTERS BEEN IS THIS IT’S CERTAINLY I THINK JUST SPEAKS TO THERE’S A TENSION THERE. REPORTER: STILL USE THEM AND WOULD RIDE SCOOTERS IN BIKE LANES IF THE LAW IS CHANGED. I FEEL IT’S THE SAFEST PLACE TO RIDE THEM, IN THE PROTECTED BIKE LANES, AND WE DON’T HAVE A TON OF THOSE DOWNTOWN, SO MAYBE WE NEED MORE. REPORTER: OR SOMETHING TO HELP BETTER INTEGRATE THIS NEW MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. I THINK WE ALL HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO USE THE TOOLS AFFORDED TO US IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER. REPORTER: POLICE WERE UNABLE TO TRACK THE MAN DOWN, AND ERIC DIDN’T WANT TO PRESS CHARGES ANYWAY. I’M TOLD THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMPLICATED PROCESS, AND IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF TIME TO CHANGE THE LAWS.
