(SN) TIME NOW FOR EYEWITNESS NEWS CALL 12 FOR ACTION… FUNDRAISER FRUSTRATION. (CG) AFTER A FUNDRAISER AT A LOCAL FROZEN YOGURT SHOP — AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA IS ASKING — WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MONEY WE RAISED? EYEWITNESS NEWS CONSUMER REPORTER SUSAN CAMPBELL JOINS US WITH THE DETAILS. (SC) THE FUNDRAISER RAN FROM SEPTEMBER THROUGH DECEMBER. THE LOCAL PTA IS EXPECTING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. AND THEY SAY – THEY’RE STILL WAITING… GUY SUFFOLETTO IS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE PTA FOR TIOGUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN COVENTRY… 10:37:06 our big goal this year was to raise a ton of money to improve the playground. :11 SO THE PTA STARTED BRAINSTORMING FUNDRAISERS…. 10:37:21 menchies came along, offered up a fundraiser and we went for it. :25 THE FUNDRAISER WAS SIMPLE. GO TO THE FROZEN YOGURT SHOP ON QUAKER LANE IN WARWICK. MENTION TIOGUE ELEMENTARY. AND A PORTION OF YOUR PURCHASE WOULD GO TO THE PTA. 10:40:29 we thought it was going quite well.. IN FACT – THEY WERE EXPECTING $400… 10:41:32 $400 might not mean a lot to most people, but to the PTA, every dollar counts. :38 BUT WHEN THE PTA TRIED TO COLLECT – SUFFOLETTO SAYS THE MONEY NEVER SHOWED UP. 10:41:32 it’s a little frustrating to say the least. THE OWNER OF THE MENCHIE’S FRANCHISE IN WARWICK DIDN’T WANT TO TALK WITH ME ON CAMERA.. BUT OVER THE PHONE – SHE CONFIRMED THAT SHE HAD AGREED TO A FUNDRAISER WITH THE PTA FROM TIOGUE ELEMENTRY.. SHE SAYS – SHE NEVER PAID UP – BECAUSE THE PTA DIDN’T COMPLETE ITS PART OF THE AGREEMENT TO PROVIDE MEDIA COVERAGE FOR A CHECK PRESENTATION. BUT THE PTA PARENTS SAY – THEY TRIED. IN AN EMAIL FROM JANUARY 23RD – THE PRSIDENT WROTE “We have a contact at the local paper who covers school events, once we know the date and time we will let her know. MONTHS LATER – ON APRIL 11TH – if we have a date, I’ll tell the local paper and see if they can cover it. 10:41:18 it’s for the kids. That’s ultimately what it comes down to. WHEN WE STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ISSUE LAST WEEK – THE SHOP WAS OPEN FOR BUSINESS. ON MONDAY – IT APPEARS TO BE CLOSED… ITS WINDOWS COVERED – AND NO ANSWER ON THE PHONE. (SC) THE OWNER OF THE FROZEN YOGURT FRANCHISE TOLD ME SHE HAS GIVEN MORE THAN 5- THOUSAND DOLLARS TO VARIOUS SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH FUNDRAISERS. I REACHED OUT TO THE MENCHIE’S CORPORATE OFFICE FOR COMMENT. SO FAR – I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK.
